Living Relaxation & Living Calmness,

Mind & Body Coordination

Enso kanji

There are many things in the world which on the surface do look similar, but in fact are quite different. It is a common belief that relaxation is something passive but powerless. Most people believe they are relaxed and calm when in fact they are only slack and listless. Throughout the centuries, true relaxation has always been mistaken for “limpness.

This limp state of relaxation which has always been accepted as a norm in human society is basically a state of collapsing, like a noodle that falls limply. The condition that many consider to be relaxed is really a weak and impotent state of mind. This dysfunctional and negative state equals relaxing without mind and body coordination. Unlike “negative relaxation”, positive relaxation indicates a dynamic and a vibrant condition in which mind and body are unified/coordinated and in harmony. Negative relaxation is to relax without this state of harmony.

Fundamentally, positive relaxation and negative “relaxation” are not the same thing, because each one yields quite different results in terms of mind and body unity and flow of Ki.  Positive relaxation indicates living calmness. The greater the ability of relaxing positively, the greater the ability to cultivate living calmness under any circumstances. Positive relaxation is the embodiment of a calm mind that is both unfettered and immovable.

Living calmness and positive relaxation are always intertwined. If you have one you have the other. Conversely, if you do not have positive relaxation you cannot develop true calmness. Living calmness means relaxing completely without losing power, remaining truly calm without being dull and lost in thoughts, and last but not least, being positive without being assertive.

The Japanese word “Shisei” refers both to the posture of the body and to the attitude of one’s mind. It refers to the ability of a person to remain completely relaxed and composed even if the mountains would crumble around. “Shisei” is the physical embodiment of “Fudoshin”, the 'immovable mind'. “Fudoshin” indicates living calmness, equanimity and non dissension… A truly immovable mind must be grounded in the Universe and its principles.

These are the attributes of a person who does not seek any form of power, deception, or control over others in any form and shape.
